FAQs
Do I need planning permission for a rear extension or side return extension?
In August 2020 it was announced that extensions on terraced houses which are within 3m of the property’s back wall will be acceptable under permitted development (4m for detached homes). This greatly benefits the process if you are planning on gaining some valuable living space by way of a rear or side return extension. Contact us to find out more.
Do I require planning permission for my loft extension?
It is likely that you will require planning permission in order to convert your loft space. The regulations differ from borough to borough so it is advised to contact them for further information. A local architect should be able to advise you on your home specifically based on their experience and familiarity with the local planning & building control. The architect will also be able to help create the space considering your needs and coordinate accordingly with the contractors in order to successfully complete the conversion. If you don’t want to go through the hassle, we can coordinate all of this for you.
Do I need planning permission for an outbuilding?
Most outbuildings are approved under permitted development. There are circumstances where you may require planning permission depending on the size of the dwelling. Our experienced engineers can help with your design process and complete the entire build- including sourcing power and water services.
Can I live at home during a rear or side return extension?
There’s sure to be a lot of dust throughout the project due to the demolishment and rebuild. We always aim to work as tidily as we can and secure the workspace to avoid the spread of dust. If you have sufficient space at home to avoid the building work, it should be fine to live at home, however if the space is limited it may be worth considering short-term accommodation, at least until the majority of dust begins to settle. Contact us to arrange a free consultation and establish the best approach for you.
Can I choose the design of my home extension?
Whilst some aspects will have to comply with planning/building control or permitted development requirements, the majority of the design of the extension will be within your control.
Does building control need to be notified of my home extension?
As a brand new extension, building control will need to be notified to ensure its safety compliance with the current British Standard. Our approved contractors can notify building control on your behalf and complete all works involved in order to meet the requirements of building control or permitted development.
